The bust went down around 5:30 p.m., Thursday, April 25, when members of the Stamford Police Narcotics and Organized Crime Unit learned that two men would be in the area of the Five Guys restaurant on High Ridge Road with guns, said Capt. Richard Conklin.

Officers set-up surveillance on the restaurant and watched as two men, including Wilbert Bunch of Stamford walked into the restaurant. Officers moved in and searched both men, Conklin said.

During the search, officers found a .22 semi-automatic pistol in a backpack that Bunch was carrying, he added. The gun, although unloaded, came back as being stolen in Coral Gables, Florida in December 2011.

Bunch told the officers "I'm not going to waste your time, I stole that gun," he said. When told it was reported stolen in Florida, Bunch said he didn't steal it in Florida, but did not offer where he had stolen it from, Conklin said.

"This is another good example of members of the squad being proactive in removing an illegal, stolen gun from the streets of Stamford," Conklin said.

Bunch was charged with theft of a firearm and possession of a firearm and is being held on $100,000 bond.
